The neighboring Republic held an election last Saturday, but till yesterday we heard not a word as to how it went. Not a man had been in town from Le Claire, that we heard of, since last week, and even the ‘gay and festive’ countenance of the never-failing Jones, of the daily hack, hasn’t been seen here this week. But yesterday the hack made its appearance again with another driver, Mr. Jones being temporarily laid up. The city, we are happy to learn, is not snowed in entirely, and a large number of inhabitants still survive, especially those of the Citizens’ Union party, which arrived the election, beating the regular Democratic party, and choosing all their city officers and four out of eight alderman. The following is the list of their new city government:
Mayor, James Gamble, re-elected; Recorder, Jo. H. White; Treasurer, P. Gaffney; Marshal and Collector, J. L. Holcomb; Street Commissioner, H. O. Stacey.
ALDERMEN. – 1st ward, P. T. Byram, C. H. Stacey; 2d ward, Lemuel Parkhurst, H. A. Harrington; 3d ward, S. W. Treat and – Gilbert; 4th ward, David Hawthorn and William Gardner. The last four are Democrats.
