Contributions of clothing, provisions, etc. are coming in
large quantities; sometimes to the amount of $20,000 in a single day.
Never was there such a patriotic people as ours!
Their blood and their wealth are laid upon the altar of their country with
enthusiasm.
I must say here that the South Carolinians are the gentlest
people I ever met with. They accede to every requisition with cheerfulness;
and never have I known an instance where any one of them has used subterfuge to
evade a rule, however hard it might bear upon them. They are the soul of honor,
truth, and patriotism.
