Well, well, my birthday came six days ago, and how old do
you think I am? Let me see. Appearances would seem to indicate that I am thirty
or thereabouts, but as I was born on the 20th day of March, 1843, I must now be
just twenty-one years of age, this being the year 1864 Of age and six days
over. I thought that when a man became of age, he generally became free and his
own master as well. If this ain't a burlesque on that old time-honored custom,
then carry me out — but not feet foremost.
