. . . before advancing upon Gen. Grant’s position at Pittsburg Landing, to “aim at the feet” in a fight. The officers were instructed to specially directed the men to fire very low. This fact probably accounts for the very large, indeed disproportionate number of our wounded. Our troops on the other hand fired high, and immense numbers of the dead rebels were found shot in the head, and an unusual proportion of those struck were killed on the spot.
