The Tax on Real Estate

By the law passed on the 5th of August, 1861, levying a direct tax on twenty millions of dollars per annum upon the United States to pay the interest on the public debt, the amount apportioned to Iowa is $452,038.  There is a provision which allows the States, on assuming payment of the same, a deduction of 15 per cent.  As our Legislature has availed itself of this provision, that will bring the annual sum required from the State of Iowa down to $384,234.  This tax is to be assessed on the value of all real estate, with its improvements, at the rate which they are worth in money on the first day of April 1862.
