The Sixtieth regiment of colored troops was largely made up of Iowa men. Six Companies of this regiment went into camp at Keokuk and were mustered into the service of the United States on the 13th of October, 1863. The field officers were, colonel, John D. Hudson, of St. Louis; lieutenant-colonel, Milton F. Collins, of Keokuk; major John L. Murphy of Keokuk. For one year and one-half this regiment served on guard and garrison duty at various places in the Mississippi valley with fidelity.
