FORT MONROE, VA.,
August 16, 1862.
Hon. E. M. STANTON, Secretary of War:
I parted with General McClellan yesterday at 3 o'clock p.m.
The movement was progressing finely and will be successful. The army is in fine
spirits and splendid fighting order, and only wish they may be attacked. No one
could have made the movement more skillfully or in less time.
L. THOMAS,
Adjutant-General.
