Fort Wayne, Ind., Aug. 29, 1862.
Yesterday I received a dispatch from Indianapolis saying
that Governor Morton had appointed me first lieutenant and adjutant of the
One-hundredth Indiana Volunteer Infantry. My commission will come in a few
days. The adjutancy is a very good position, and I am better qualified for it
than for anything else. No colonel has yet been appointed.
