Fayetteville, Virginia. — Snow on the ground; not
cold, but raw and disagreeable. Granting furloughs to four men from each
company keeps me busy. A week or two ago the colonel sent a recommendation to
appoint Sergeant Haven, of Company A, a captain, for services in connection with
our naval expedition across New River. His services were probably important,
but the jump over the heads of lieutenants is rather too big.
