New York, March 20, 1864.
. . . You have observed that the Fremont men have held their
first meeting. Did I tell you that I was called upon to become president of the
Fremont Campaign Club; and, if I should decline, that I would at least preside
at the first meeting, which was held on March 18 in the Cooper Institute? It
would have been a fine celebration of my birthday had I done so! I shall copy
the letter which I wrote in reply. It will show you what I think about it. . .
. Are you going to move on the everlasting Potomac? . . .
