April 28, 1863.
My dear sister:
Our troops are on the move, and to-morrow we expect to meet
the enemy. I have been given a large and important command, and I feel a great
responsibility; God grant we may be successful. If anything happens to me, you
will remember how well I have always loved you. You will always believe that I
have lived and shall die true to my country and my name. I hope for the success
of our arms and am confident. I leave in an hour and can write no more.
Receive my love,
John Sedgwick.
