We left camp early this morning for the grand raid through
South Carolina, under the command of General Sherman. But our march will not be
an easy one, for the rebels will do their best to hold us in check. There are
one hundred thousand men within a radius of twenty miles, and there's no telling
how the campaign will end or who will be left dead or mortally wounded upon the
field without a friend near. Cannon began booming in less than an hour, but we
had no losses today. We moved fo[r]ward about eight miles through Whiffy Swamp,
driving the rebels all the way. On account of the bad road we had to travel,
our division could not keep up with the rest of the corps, but went into camp
about four miles in the rear. The Fifteenth Corps came up on our left to Hicky
Hill, making a march of twenty miles.
