Camp Hayes, Raleigh, Virginia, March 22, 1862.
Dear Webby: —
You are six years old — a big boy. I want you to be a very good boy; tell the
truth, and don't be afraid. Learn to read and write, and you shall have horses
to ride and a gun when you get a little bigger. You must learn to spell well,
too. A man is ashamed if he can't spell.
Tell Birch that the tall fifer that took Spencer is now
playing the bugle, and plays well. His name is Firman. Good-bye.
Your father,
R. B. Hayes.
Master Webb Hayes.
