There is no whistling wind.
The army are fornenst you in relation to Grant. It was a most apprehensible surprise followed
by an awful slaughter. Our cause was put in terrible peril. Want of foresight, circumspection, prudence
and generalship are all charged upon the wretched in man. But we need not dispute about it. I admire your pertinacity and steadfastness
in behalf of your friend, but I fear he is played out. The soldiers are down on him.
