Early this morning
the stillness is interrupted by the national salute, for it is the eighty-seventh
anniversary of the nation's birth. The day passes by pleasantly without any
demonstration. During the evening it is surmised that Grant and his army have,
with imposing grandeur, celebrated the day. Vague rumors are on the wing this
evening that Grant to-day has made another successful swing; that Vicksburg has
fallen.
