I had never before
imagined that any one could live in the extreme state of debility under which
my father is now suffering. The act of taking even a single swallow of water is
painful to him, on account of his great feebleness. He has eaten nothing of any
consequence (only a few mouthfuls of soup) for five or six days. I can not
believe he can possibly survive through the week.
