From the Muscatine Journal we learn that quite a comedy of errors was lately enacted at that place.
Two gentlemen passing by the State Bank at a late hour of the night, thought they perceived indications of anther assault upon the vaults of that institution. Calling in the assistance of another, they marched boldly to the door determined to solve the mystery.
The quondam burglar in the shape of a watchman who was inside, was meanwhile watching the proceedings without, with a suspicious eye, and as they approached and one of them laid his hand upon the latch, bang, went the blunderbuss, the ball whizzing close by their ears. This little comedy of errors came very near terminating in a bloody tragedy.
The receipts of the Internal Revenue Bureau during the month of December amounted to $20,000,000.
The cars are running from the Mississippi River as far west as Pella.
STRUCK WATER – A company boring for oil in West Chicago, struck at the depth of between 700 and 800 ft., on Saturday, what seems to be an underground lake. The water from this artesian well now flows at the rate of six hundred barrels per hour. It has not been ascertained how high the stream can be carried, but it is believed sufficiently high to furnish any building in the city with water. The new well has become an object of great interest here.
