Washington, April 24, '61.
I have come down here
anticipating that Lincoln's “masterly inactivity” would soon force a crisis.
The Mount Savage Company owes me about $325, but could not give me any currency
that would pass in Washington. I am going to buy a horse, and shall probably have
to draw on you (or Mother) for the money necessary for that and for my board
and lodging for a month or so — shall draw for $225 or $250 probably. If you
will pay the draft, I will settle as soon as I get home. I have no position
yet, but hope to get a place on the staff by and by.
