Mr. Faxon, Chief
Clerk, is ill and leaves for New York in the Tacoma. Shall greatly miss him. No
one can fill his place. Thomas G. Welles is with his general, McCook, relieved
from duty at Fort Stevens. I observe and have for some time past that the Gazette
at Cincinnati, a paper in the interest of Mr. Chase, has been violent and
reckless in its assaults on the Navy Department. With some smattering
information of matters generally, there is much palpable ignorance in regard to
our monitors, ordnance, etc.
