Astor House, Saturday morning,
May 11, six o'clock, 1850.
MY DEAR SIR,—I had a fine passage yesterday and was at Canal street at
four o'clock. I hope to reach Baltimore this evening, and Washington to-morrow
morning, all in time.
We had a fine time on Thursday evening. It was particularly gratifying to
me, as it furnished an opportunity of meeting many respectable and spirited men
of a younger generation, whose acquaintance I have not had heretofore the means
of cultivating. For a crushed man I enjoyed the occasion remarkably well. If
others felt as much pleasure, innocent enjoyment was extensively experienced.
Yours, truly,
DAN'L WEBSTER.
