To-day we reach
Falling Creek, where the mounted portion of the Seventh is thrown forward to
the river bridge, where they encounter the enemy in a brisk shirmish, which for
dash and vim elicits the compliments of "Black Jack." Advancing,
General Slocum discovered that Johnson with his army was strongly posted in the
vicinity of Bentonville.
