You ought to be a diplomatist. Another motive to me for
discontent with my present position is the fear that I may stand in your way.
It would be difficult for an Administration to appoint the brother of one so
obnoxious as myself without pledges or explanations, which you could not stoop
to give. If I were a private man, there would be no influence against you on
this score.1
