A very brilliantlooking party. Kate looked tired out and languid, especially at
the close of the evening, when I went into the bridal chamber to say good
night. She had lost her old severity and formal stiffness of manner, and seemed
to think she had arrived. McDowell , Stahel , Schenck , Stoneman , Cameron
and others present. The President came for a few minutes.
