Diary of Brigadier-General William F. Bartlett: July 26, 1864

Brigade reviewed by General Ledlie. Did not make very good appearance. Officers, even of old regiments, ignorant. . . . . Shell burst all around these  Headquarters in a very disagreeable way. I pray hourly that I may be spared.
