Clear cool morning. On picket. A shot rang out last night on
the still air, fired by one of the pickets. Caused a little excitement. There
was no real cause for an alarm. All became quiet. Pickets make a mistake at
times. The regiment guarded a wagon train on to Halltown, about five miles.
Returned quite late this afternoon, when we were relieved from picket duty.
