Came across E. P. Sanders, from Lansing, Michigan, and a
jolly old soul is he. Can't get discouraged where he is. Talk a great deal about
making our escape but there is not much prospect. We are very strongly guarded
with artillery bearing on every part of the prison. The long bridge I have
heard so much about crosses the river just below the island. It is very long
and has been condemned for years — trains move very slow across it. There was a
big fire over in Richmond last night about 2 o'clock; could hear all the fire
bells and see the house tops covered with people looking at it. Great
excitement among the Johnny Rebs.
