I called early on
the President in relation to Seward's letter concerning the blockade and
courtesy to British vessels. He concurred in my views. I went to the State
Department and saw Mr. Hunter. He agreed with me and complimented my letter,
and also one I wrote a few days since regarding the Japanese vessel, which
seems to have made an impression upon him, and which he complimented as very
statesmanlike and instructive.
