Mr. Bancroft has
to-day delivered his oration
on the death of Lincoln. It is the anniversary of his birth, and hence the
occasion. The orator, or historian, acquitted himself very well. Some things
were said which would hardly have been expected at such a time, particularly
some sharp points against England and Lord John Russell, which I was not sorry
to hear. Both the Minister and the Government were bad enemies of ours in our
troubles; they added to these trials; they made them formidable; they intended
our ruin.
