Seward read a letter
in regard to the Shenandoah, expressing my views and adopting my suggestions
and almost my language. The city is full of visitors, and Washington is gay
with parties. Attended reception at the Executive Mansion and afterward called
on Sir Frederick Bruce and his niece Lady Elma Thurlow. Met at each [place]
Madame La Verte (and daughter), of Mobile, who is making demonstration here and
writing, I am told, a South-side view of the Rebellion. I met her here nearly
forty years ago, then Miss Wharton, a gay and intelligent young lady.
