HEADQUARTERS WHIPPLE'S
DIVISION, RESERVE ARMY CORPS,
ARLINGTON, VA., September
4, 1862.
I wrote you yesterday, informing you of my arrival at this
place. We came here under orders from McDowell (in whose corps we are), who
directed us to march from Fairfax Court House to Arlington. Since reaching here
we have had no orders of any kind, and we cannot tell where we are going, though
I presume we will take post somewhere in the vicinity of the city, for its
defense. I hardly think the enemy will make an attack on the city, but believe
he will cross a column above into Maryland. Our division, the Reserves, is
pretty well used up, and ought, strictly speaking, to be withdrawn,
reorganized, filled up with recruits, and put in efficient condition.
