Called on Stanton, respecting the letters of General
Gillmore from June 12 to July 6, 1863.
Had a call from J. P. Hale respecting appointments. This
man, so long a Senator, has no comprehensive or statesmanlike views. Would set
aside legislative action and law because he thinks it operates hard on a
lieutenant whom he knows.
